What is Limewash?

Limewash is a natural, breathable paint made from limestone. It is a very ancient paint that has been used for centuries to decorate and protect walls. Limewash is made by crushing limestone, burning it to create quicklime, and then slaking the quicklime with water to create lime putty. The lime putty is then matured for several months before being thinned with water to create Limewash.

Limewash is naturally white and has a matte, slightly chalky appearance. It can be coloured with pigments to create a variety of colors. Limewash can be used internally or externally, but it works best on porous surfaces such as traditional lime plaster, lime render, stone, and brick.

Unlike modern barrier paints, limewash does not form a film on the surface of the wall. Instead, it sinks into the wall and hardens by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This creates a deep matte finish that is both breathable and protective.

When used on porous surfaces, the colour of limewash will deepen if there is any dampness in the background material. This can create a beautiful, natural shading effect.

Tallow (animal fat) or raw linseed oil can be added to limewash to improve its water-shedding qualities when used externally. Casein (skimmed milk) can be added to help limewash bond to less porous surfaces.

Limewash is a sustainable, eco-friendly paint that is a great choice for both interior and exterior applications. It is easy to apply and can be used to create a variety of looks. If you are looking for a natural, breathable paint that will protect your home and improve its appearance, limewash is a great option.
